Albion Neighbourhood Learning and Community Centre
Honourable Mike Bernier, Minister of Education formally announced the Province’s commitment to build a new school in Albion. The City of Maple Ridge and School District No. 42 have been working in partnership on the proposal for a new school which includes a co-located Learning and Community Centre. The combined projects will create a strong neighbourhood gathering place for Albion. The site is located on 104 Avenue east of 240 Street. The school and Neighbourhood Learning & Community Centre will now begin the formal processes and approvals culminating in an opening scheduled for the fall of 2019.

This proposed project is impacted by decisions from senior government. School District No. 42 is in the midst of the work required by the Provincial Government to move forward with a new school in the Albion neighbourhood. As part of the long term planning done by the City and School District, a site has already been identified on 104 Avenue east of 240 Street. Earlier this year the City of Maple Ridge collaborated with School District No. 42 on a community consultation for this new site. Here is the media release that outlines that project.

It has been the practice of the City of Maple Ridge to work with the School District to co-locate parks, recreation and culture facilities around schools as they are clearly important community gathering spaces. In May of 2011 the old Albion Hall, located on 240 Street north of Lougheed Highway, was torn down. The replacement of that facility has been a part of the long term planning for the neighbourhood.

The key components of the proposed Albion Neighbourhood Learning and Community Centre include;
  1. Community Hall/Gathering place that can open out into a natural setting.
  2. Meeting rooms and programming space.
  3. Child care space.
  4. Kitchen facility.
  5. Outdoor spaces, community gardens and play spaces.
Building costs are estimated to be eight to ten million with annual operating costs estimated at $604,000.
